Three Things

30-day gratitude challenge

One prompt a day, three answers, about a minute. Start on November 1 or any day you like.

November is the natural month for gratitude. The days get shorter, the year starts winding down, and in the US it ends with Thanksgiving. This challenge gives you one prompt for each day of the month. Each day you write three answers. It takes about a minute.

You don't have to start on November 1. Day 1 is whatever day you begin.

The rules

  1. Read the day's prompt. Each one points your attention somewhere specific.
  2. Write three answers. Short is fine. One line each.
  3. Keep it under two minutes. The goal is to come back tomorrow, not to write an essay today.
  4. Missed a day? Skip it. Don't double up. Pick up with today's prompt.
  5. On day 30, read everything back. This is the part people remember.

Week 1: Noticing small things

  1. Day 1 Three things you enjoyed today, however small.
  2. Day 2 Three things you ate or drank this week that you liked.
  3. Day 3 Three sounds, smells or sights that made today better.
  4. Day 4 Three things that worked today without you noticing.
  5. Day 5 Three everyday comforts you usually take for granted.
  6. Day 6 Three moments today when you felt at ease.
  7. Day 7 Three small things you'd miss if they disappeared.

Week 2: People

  1. Day 8 Three people who made this week easier.
  2. Day 9 Three things someone in your family has done for you.
  3. Day 10 Three friends, and one thing you appreciate about each.
  4. Day 11 Three times a stranger was kind to you.
  5. Day 12 Three people who taught you something you still use.
  6. Day 13 Three people you could thank this week, and what for.
  7. Day 14 Thank one of them today. Then write three things you noticed afterward.

Week 3: Yourself

  1. Day 15 Three things you did well today.
  2. Day 16 Three strengths you rely on.
  3. Day 17 Three difficult things you got through.
  4. Day 18 Three habits that are good for you.
  5. Day 19 Three decisions you're glad you made.
  6. Day 20 Three things your body did for you this week.
  7. Day 21 Three ways you've grown in the last year.

Week 4: The world around you

  1. Day 22 Three things you like about where you live.
  2. Day 23 Three places that mean something to you.
  3. Day 24 Three things about this season you enjoy.
  4. Day 25 Three things you learned recently.
  5. Day 26 Three things about today's table: the food, the people, a moment. (In the US, this is Thanksgiving in 2026.)
  6. Day 27 Three things that made you laugh this month.
  7. Day 28 Three things you're looking forward to.

The last two days: Looking back

  1. Day 29 Read back through the month. Three entries that surprised you.
  2. Day 30 Three things that changed for you in these 30 days.

Doing the challenge in Three Things

Three Things is built for exactly this: three lines a day, a gentle daily reminder, and a history you can scroll back through on day 30. Every November the app also counts your progress for you, so you can see how many of the 30 days you've written.

Questions

Do I have to start on November 1?

No. Start any day and treat it as day 1. The prompts work in any month.

What if I miss a few days?

Skip them and continue with today's prompt. Twenty-five days of entries are worth far more than a challenge you abandoned on day 6 because you fell behind.

Can I do this with my family or a friend?

Yes. Share the day's prompt in a group chat or at dinner, and each person answers with their own three things.

Why three answers instead of one?

One answer is usually the obvious one. The second and third make you look a little closer, which is where the habit of noticing gets built. It's the same idea as the Three Good Things exercise.
